Neonatal Intensive Care Nurses, or NICU Nurses, care for premature and critically ill newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital. As a subspecialty in ICU nursing , this is an incredibly important role within a hospital. These nurses work with new-born infants born with a variety of problems – ranging from prematurity, birth defects, infection, cardiac malformations, and surgical problems.

Differing from the PICU, the neonatal unit provides care to babies in their first month of life and newborns with critical conditions.

Not for the faint hearted, you’ll be dealing with the most vulnerable patients in this highly specialised unit. A qualification in Advanced Midwifery & Neonatology training is recommended for those looking to become NICU nurses.

At Mednurse, we work with specialised RNs to place them in the best new career opportunities. We have access to the best nursing jobs in the Western Cape – Cape Town, Garden Route, and surrounding areas as well as in Gauteng – Johannesburg, Pretoria and more.
